You need to understand the part of them that touches the journey: paying for things, sometimes calling a ride, using small services, and making daily moments feel less awkward. The apps are not the point. The point is to move through China without every small transaction becoming a question.
Most foreign travelers should consider preparing Alipay, WeChat Pay, or both before arriving in China. Both are widely used in daily life. Some travelers use Alipay more for payments. Some use WeChat because it may also be useful for communication. Some prepare both and use whichever works best in the moment. The sensible approach is to prepare one strong option, keep a backup, and make sure the guide knows what you are comfortable using.
In China, many small daily actions have moved into mobile ecosystems. Payment is the obvious one. But these apps can also connect to ride-hailing, restaurant services, local merchants, small travel tools and mini-programs. When it works, the experience feels fast. When it does not, the traveler suddenly has to solve a system they did not come to China to study.
The traveler should not be learning payment tools at the same time they are adjusting to a new country.
